This movie comes out on December 7. It is starring Nichole Kidman. I have received 8 emails about it and decided to read it in its entirety. I added the link below for you to go too and read for yourself. I will not be seeing this movie, my children will not be going to see this movie. I even went to the author's website and looked at all the books that he has written. I wanted to check the titles for anything my children might have read. We have to check everything, everything they watch, read and listen too. You have to decide for you and yours.

Hi Stacy,
I have been discussing this movie with some friends and am interested to hear what in particular you object to.
Thanks

nickandallismom I will certainly try to explain, but please note that these are my educated opinions that I am sharing. I object to the anti God themes throughout all Mr. Pullman's works. I have read quotes from Philip himself. He writes and speaks the opposite of the values that we teach our children. I have went to his site and read all about the books. It sheds a negative light on God and the church. The tagline is
"It is the Alethiometer. It tells the truth. As for how to read it, you'll have to learn by yourself." the alethiometer was a device that was said to be used by framing questions in your mind. If only you could get all the answers for life by framing questions in your mind and then having a compass to read your thoughts and then answer. Mr. Pullman is not ashamed to proclaim that he doesn't believe in God and I am not ashamed to proclaim that I do believe that God exsist.

All I know is...

These were fun books and I know many that enjoyed reading them with their kids. They are fictional and you must be able to relay to your kids the difference between a fictional "story book" and books that were intended to be portraying "true" or real events in literature. Many are anticipating this movie. To a child, it's no different than Harry Potter unless you look for reasons to make an issue of it and then pass that on to them.

As a teacher to children, they take in everything they see and hear. Yes we can try to explain fiction to them, but depending on the age, they may not be able to make that distinction, ie having nightmares. I think the point here, is parents must make an educated decision about any book or movie that your kids see, not simply say everyone is seeing it or likes it. There are alot of movies, books and music and actions that my kids friends do that my kids will not. There are alot of books and movies out there I can enjoy with my kids without having to go in to subjects I disagree with. I do keep a close eye on the books my kids read and even speak with the librarians when I find a questionable one. In my research, these books were questionable enough with the witchcraft. The bigger issue for me is with the author and his outspoken anti-God agenda which he himself made clear was part of these books and his intent behind many of his writings. He writes with an intent because he realizes the power of the wriiten word to a child's mind and the ideals it can plant in their minds. You can try to explain the difference between fiction and stories, but writers do what they do for a reason, they know it can work to influence a generation. The bottomline is parents need to make an educated decision on what their kids take in, it does matter!
