Has anyone heard, are flu shots going to be easy to get this year?  I've never had one, never really had a bad case of the flu either.  How do you know if you should get one?

OK, here is the scoop on the flu. There is no shoratge this year, so it should be easy to get one. Those most susceptible to catching the flu and suffering complications, such as hospitalization, are the very young, the very old, and those with serious medical conditions. Luckily, most of us fall in the middle and are pretty healthy. If that is the case, I would still encourage you to get a flu shot/nasal spray as you can act as the reservoir of disease and spread it to the high risk populations. So, I always get the question...can I get the flu from the flu shot? No. The flu shot carries inactiviated virus. Now the flumist nasal spray, does contain live virus. It will give you mild symptoms, but actually offers better immunity. Lots in the news lately about the age range chnaging on this nasal form. It has always been healthy kids 5 and up. The FDA did approve it down to 2 this year, but the American Acadely of Pediatrics has not yet weighed in. Most pediatricans, inlcudng me, will not give to less than 5 this year. Maybe next year when more data available. I think I hit the major things. Let me know if you want more!

Babies under 6 months can't get it, so their caretakers should get it.

I saw a sign at Walgreens that they are now offering flu-shots.  Do you think that would be an acceptable place to get one, or should I go to my doctor's office?

I did get a flu shot at Walgreens this year. It was $25 and they will submit it to your insurance carrier. If your insurance doesn't pay for it then they bill you. I was in and out no problem. My youngest is 6 months old and has gotten his first dose (the first time they get 2, one month apart) but I figured I shouldn't bring anything home to them if I could help it. I will definately be going back to Walgreens next year too.
