My daughter's toenails are driving me crazy! I have the biggest trouble clipping them. About a year ago, I clipped both of her big toenails too short. Ever since I cannot get them to grow out. I started running my fingernail under the edges to make sure that she didn't get an ingrown nail. Just when I think that we are in the clear she somehow manages to stub her toes and break the nail. I have tried making her wear socks and putting her shoes on for her to make sure that they don't get damaged but it never works due to the stubbing! I don;t know what to do. Does anyone have some advice on how to get her nail back to normal?

I agree that kids toenails tend to be pretty funky, but there are some things that can help prevent ingrown nails and feet problems. Make sure to cut straight across and smooth any rough edges (no curves) when you trim the nail,. You didn't say how old your child is, but if she is toddler-ish age, it is important to make sure that her shoes, socks, pajamas with feet are all loose and not super tight. Those old fashioned shoes we all learned to walk in are not actually good for children's feet either - their feet are still developing and shoes that have some give (soft leather, flexible soles) are best for this (and they don't even need to wear shoes unless they are outside). Likewise, give their feet time to breathe - toddler/baby feet perspire a lot more than an adult's and if their feet are covered and always moist, that can lead to problems too. I would have your ped take a look at her toes to make sure there isn't something else going on though.

My son suffers with toenail problems also..  If it is just a mild problem try cutting a small v shape in the middle of the nail, this will release the pressure on the corners of the nail sometimes keeping it from becoming ingrown.  Also  I have been using a home remendy with my son my making a mixture of products with water and soaking his foot in it  and then putting pure tea tree oil on the cuticle to help heal the toenail.  I get the products from a great health and wellness company.  If you need any more information let me know.
