Subject: Aqua Dots recall: same as Date Rape Drug

I was shocked to hear about today's recall of the popular arts and crafts toy "Aqua Dots".  My 7 year old daughter watches Disney Channel and other kids programs that often run the Aqua Dots commercial.   Today the product was pulled from store shelves after the beads were found to contain the same chemical as in the date rape drug.  If ingested, it causes seizures, coma and even death.  Aqua Dots were made in China.  2 children in the US and 3 in Australia were hospitalized after swallowing some of the beads.  The toy is for kids 4 and older but as we all know, toddler siblings can get their hands on small items quickly and stick them in their mouths.  That is exactly what happened in this case.  I'm sure many families in our area have this toy in their home.  We all know how aweful the lead problem has been with toys from China.. now this!  Make sure to check out the latest info on this developing story.

I can not believe this deal with Aqua Dots. I think the US should hold the toy makers responsible.

I think they were supposed to be safe but they cheaped out and used industrial solvent instead of glue.

China has developed really quickly and have gone from almost no industry to a high level of industrial development. They were thrust into this highly technological time without having very many civil liberties. If you look at the history of the US, we had a lot of time for reforms regarding worker's rights, safe manufacturing, etc. China just has not had the time to have those progressive changes. That is why both their human rights and business ethics are severely lacking.

The problem is that they continue to make a profit and continue to cut corners. I think American big businesses should do the responsible thing and move manufacturing centers back to the United States. This would solve a lot of problems, like urban decay in our cities, and help China undergo the development that we already had the opportunity to experience.

Well, fat chance any of that will happen but I'm just ranting.

This Aqua Dots problem is horrible. These recalls are especially scary with the Christmas season coming up. It's so hard to tell which xmas toys will be safe?

How do you really know what toys are safe?
