I do work from home and this is something that I just recently started. I love being able to spend the day with my kids and not having to meet tons and tons of deadlines with work. I am fortunate enough to work for a company that offers wonderful products and doesn't require a lot of time. I can work at my own pace and set my own schedule. I want to know what others who work from home do or if you have any questions for me feel free to ask them.

Katie

Katie, how do you keep away from the kitchen and snacking?  It would seem like having that much food so close would be tempting.

Patrick it's pretty easy, between chasing the kids and doing my own stuff there really isn't a lot of time for me to snack. I also try not to buy junk food or anything that I can just grab and eat. If there isn't junk/snack food then there isn't a problem.

I too, am a "Work-at-home" mom and I have learned a TON in the last three years of being at home with my kiddos. The biggest hurdle has been self-discipline! I found a few suggestions that have made my life easier.

1. Wake up before everyone else and shower and get dressed. (you'll handle the day much better)

2. Keep your work in your office and away from "home". (You need this - trust me)

3. Work your plan, budget your time and respect your time. (Use your calendar and work a week in advance)

4. Meal plan or plan to starve or go broke (Pizza, fast food and frozen dinners - wont cut it for long)

5. Give yourself "DAYS" off - (Respect your family time)

6. Have a separate phone line in your office and let your answering machine work for you when your not avail.

7. Let your family know your working schedule in advance (put it on the fridge- this helps to avoid arguments and guilt)

8. Have special toys or activities that the kids can ONLY do while you are working. (This makes your work time a special time for them too)

9. Hire a neighbor kid to come over and play with your kids while you work. (I got Nick for a whopping $5 a day and he has WAY more energy than I do!)

10. Set everyones expectations in advance - everyone needs to know that just because mom is home, she is not "home".

I hope this helps everyone out there! There are a lot more tips and tricks but those are the ones that I found to be the MOST helpful!

Sincerely,
Sarah

I have desiginated their nap time -- my time (to work, relax, etc). I find that I get the most work done when the kids are sleeping. That is when I do phone calling and return phone calls (if I am busy during the day - I'll let them leave a message and return it that day) and address all the e-mails. E-mailing is the biggest time sucking thing in the world!
However, I am facing a new challenge -- my daughter isn't always taking naps. It is really frustrating because I feel I get nothing done on those days.
Sarah - have you dealt with that? Anyone else?

I have a question for you if you have the time to let me know how you got into working from home?  I have been a "housewife" and have a 5 yr. old and just got news form my husband that he lost his job, so I am lookin ginto finding something for me to do to help out the house, but have a son I need to look out for first and do not know what to do first.  I really need to find something soon, and my thoughts were going towrds outside the home, but if I could find something at home that would be great.  Could you please explain how? Thanks so much!

Hi everyone, I’m new to STLMOMS, so far I love it! I do have a question for any stay at home moms. Is there any work that doesn't involve selling? I’m a stay at home mom now so I’m just looking for something to bring in a little extra money. Thank you in advance. Billie Jean

I have to agree that working from home is fabulous! It's nice not to have to wake up and go fight the traffic! Oh, I do think that there are some jobs that don't involve selling ~ medical transcription, call ops, taking orders and so on.

I do childcare in my home for teachers. This way I have my summers and holidays off too.

I am currently on leave from my job awaiting the arrival of twins. I would love to find something that is challenging but flexible and allows me to work from home, I have a background in healthcare but it is really hard to discern which sites are legit and which are total scams, any advice and a point in the right direction would be greatly appreciated!

hello ladies! My daughter Georgia is five weeks old and I have to return to work in another five weeks. I'm dreading it! I would love to find a way to work from home so that I can be with her full time. Any information you can give me would be great!

Hi Everyone!  I  decided to stay home with my children and I still need income.  I am going to do childcare but I am having a hard time finding parents in need.  Any suggestions?

thanks,

Hi Erin!  I currenlty have a home daycare that I am trying to phase out!  Anyway, there are several things you can do to promote your business.

  • Put an ad in the paper (I found this costly but I did recieve a few calls from it, I acually got my first family from the paper)
  • Advertise your business on www.daycaremanager.net (This is where I got the rest of my families, it's free and easy to set up)
  • Call your church and put yourself on their daycare list
  • Hang flyers at parks, grocery stores, gyms, etc
  • Word of mouth
  • Send out a mass email to everyone you know letting them know what you are looking for!

Good luck!

Hi Katie!  I'm new to this site, but not new to WAH.  I've been a SAHM for over 6 years, and have been an independent consultant with Tastefully Simple for over 4 years now.  I love that I have a life outside of being my kids' moms (which I adore and is my greatest job!), and that I can make enough money through TS to send my kids to an awesome private school!

I would love to get to know other WAHmoms in the St. Louis area!

Hi Tami!   I've heard of TS.  Isn't that the company that sells the awesome dips?   I am an Arbonne Consultant and Makeup Artist!  I LOVE working from home!
