Both of my girls take gymnastics and that is the only thing they are in right now. Last year we let the oldest try soccer and it just wasn't her thing. I have a lot of people who don't understand why she is not in Girls Scouts or playing on the school soccer team, but when she is at the gym 4-6 hours a week I feel like that is enough for her. She has never really asked to do anything else either. If she did I would let her, but there would be limitations set as to how many activities she was in.

Do your children participate in any activities and if so how many. Do you put limits on how many things they are allowed to do at one time? If so then why.

My oldest son is 9.  He is in the 4th grade.  He plays hockey year round.  This year he expressed an interest in Fall Ball, playing the Viola, continuing boy scouts and playing hockey.  My husband and I sat down with him to talk about all of his interests.  We feel that school is his number one priority and that he had to narrow down his list to two activities.  He gave up boy scouts (which didn't upset me) and decided that he wanted to continue playing hockey (that is his love and passion) and he wanted to play the viola.  It has worked out well and he is happy and has not complained that he is being pulled in too many directions. Parents have a tendency to want their children involved in as much as possible. because they have a hard time saying no.  However, children today have schedules that would rival any working adult and school is what usually suffers in the end.  As a teacher, I can't tell you how many times I hear that they were not able to get their homework done because they were too busy!

Colleen I agree with you about school coming first. She is not nor will she ever be allowed to use being to busy as an excuse for not having her school work done. She has to have her homework done before she goes to practice or she doesn't go. Her gymnastics coaches also monitor how her grades are and if they are low they are not allowed to be on the team. I think that this needs to be done with all extra curricular activities that consume a lot of time. I know that it is the parents responsibility first, but if someone else is enforcing it, it may help.

I agree with Katie. My son is 6 and we are thinking about him trying an after school activity or some sort. He has always had to do his homework before going outside or playing and this will not change once he starts an after school activity. if it becomes a problem, I have no problem taking him out. School is very much more important.

my daughter is 9 and a half (10 next month actually).  she has 3 activities - dance, gymnastics, and scouts.  dance is on friday afternoons and gymnastics is saturday mornings.  only scouts falls during the week - but that's only twice a month.

i won't allow her any more than that.

i catch a lot of flack for not letting her play cyc sports for the school - but i work until five and the practices and games are all during the week before five.  and i would rather spend my money on something she has a natural talent doing where i don't have to rely on other parents to get her to and from because i have to work.

where do your girls do gymnastics?  we're at barron.

My girls go to GT. I think we have a meet at Barron sometime this year. Is your daughter in a rec class or on their team? One of ours is on team and the other is still in the rec class, but I am sure before too long she will be on the team as well. I don't know what I am going to do then.

we're still in class. probably between half way and 3/4 of the way through advanced intermediate. not sure where they will let her go from there. i've been told training team and team and all are invite only and this is their highest class. so if she doesn't get the invite - i'm not sure what we'll do for the next step.

bars are her challenge. not enough upper arm strength. floor is her natural talent.

Most of the times teams are invite only. My youngest doesn't like bars at all and she is the one with the most upper body strength. The oldest one likes everything. It is a tough sport, but they both enjoy it so much and I like going and watching them and seeing them improve. She has tried soccer and dance and they just weren't her thing.

Well lets see....4 kids=LOTS OF ACTIVITIES...lol

My oldest is 16, 10th grader & is involved in FBLA & Key Club @ School.  He wants to try out for Roller Hockey again this year if his job doesnt kick back up during that time.  Then Church-He is involved in our Youth Performing Arts group Vindicated which we meet every Sunday & sometimes Sat when needed for extra practices.  He also attends Youth Group every Weds night @ Church.

My daughter is 13, 8th grade & is in Band, Yearbook & Art Club.  She also plays the intermidiate sports that School offers which are only like 4-5 weeks long.  She bowls in a league every Sat morning.  She too is also in Vindicated & Youth group @ Church.  Their Youth group usually has something every month outside of regular Church hours.

Oh Boy, now my real busy body...lol My 10 yr old son, hes in 5th grade.  He is in Handbells & Drama @ School, Kids Choir @ Church, Acting Classes, Soccer which just got over with for the Season & Pokemon.  Boy Scouts was dropped last year due to our move, he didnt want to rejoin in a different place.  And Yes, Pokemon is still alive & kicking!  He is my Pokemon Medal winner.  This usually requires us to go every weekend we can to our local league for practice & then we travel throughout the year to the bigger tournies.  Weve been all over because of it!

Now I have my 3 yr old who will be keeping me on my toes during the day at the playgroups as soon as we can get into one!

And myself, well Im the one who gets to put the milage on her car & play Miss Taxi driver for those said children...lol  I really dont mind it most of the time, its just the days the kids stay after school for an hour, but by the time the bus gets here its only 30 minutes so it doesnt seem worth it to me.  I guess it wouldnt be 1/2 as bad if Dad was home more often to help out with all the driven but since I stay home during the day, guess I cant really complain to much now can I...lol

I am trying to get my 6 year old to be involved in SOMETHING, I thought about Tee Ball and he said NO, I thought about gymnastics because he loves to flip around and excercise, and he said NO. The only thing I can get him to say YES to is Basketball, and that is great, except there are no programs for Kindergarteners in our area. So I told him that we would get him a net and he could practice for a year at home, then next year he can play basketball. I cannot wait to see how he does.
