I fell like the past few weeks I have been wiping noses all day long and the zyrtec just isn't helping. My poor daughters nose is starting to crack from using so many tissues on it. Any tip on what to do about this? Someone told me to use vitamin E capsules and poke a hole in them and rub it where it is raw, but she freaks out at the thought of me rubbing anything on her nose. Any helpful hints are greatly appreciated.

Katie

With my kids, I use vasoline on the end of their noses and keep applying it for one day. Usually the second day it's gone. I also use the Puffs tissues with Aloe in them too.

As miserable as this season can be with runny noses, try and remember that they are just that...runny noses.  Stay away from all over the counter cough and cold products for kids 2 and under. Although most pediatricians have advocated this stance for years, they are finally pulling them from the shelves! I think the tissues with lotion are great as well as the vasoline idea.  But if your child resists, take heart that it will eventually go away.  If it lasts longer than 2 weeks, is green/yellow, and accompanied by fever, go see your pediatrician.

Kristen thanks for the information. I feel like a walking pharmacy with my oldest becasue she has allergy pills, nose spray, and inhalers. I really wish there was a one solution medication for her so I am not toting all of this medicine around with me.

You can always also sneak in at night and put the meds on her nose then - a Q-tip works well as it has a gentle touch and might not wake her.  I often have to do this with my 9 year old who has severe atopic dermatitis and a whole other host of medical issues.

I still use the "snot sucker" on my daughter. Even though she can blow her nose I find it really helps. It cuts down on the number of times I am wiping and it really clears her out. I have made a game of it so she will still let me do it. I have a second one that I let her use on me (gross I know - but it works!). She always says that's a good one when I do her nose!

I have three children one of which is allergic to all sorts of things, shampoos, soaps, etc.  I have found a great way to increase the health of all my children just by removing some common household products that have harmful chemicals in them that can cause and contribute to asthma, allgeries, skin conditions, etc.  Also that same place that I have found the household products has an awesome childrens vitimain line(also have adults too!)  Anyway I dont know how much you know about over the counter vitimains, but most of the ones that you buy in your local stores only have an absorbtion rate of 5 to 20 percent, the rest is getting flushed through your system and that is why many people including children dont feel any difference when they take them.  The wellness company that I mentioned has a vitiman absorbtion rate of 90 to 95 percent.  That creates a great benifit to your health because those needed minerals are actually being absorbed into your system and making you overall healthier.  I really think this might help you out in the cold and flu seasons, and every day inbetween!!  Check out this website...
