I am just wondering what type of school your children go to and why you choose that school. Or if you home school why did you choose that.

Our oldest daughter goes to a catholic school and I love everything about it. She has small class sizes, they offer spanish and computer classes starting in kindergarten, she is getting a faith based education and she has to wear a uniform so there is no fighting with her over what she is going to wear every day. The decision wasn't really a hard one for us because we wanted her to be taught the same christian values at school that we teach at home. I did look into homeschooling her, but right now with 2 other children who are both under 4 it wasn't an option.

My daughter attends Catholic school. For me it was a no-brainer since I went to Catholic school too and loved it. For my husband, it was a little bit harder. Although raised Catholic, he went to public school. I think the hardest obstacle for him was the price tag. Well, we don't have any money, but our girl LOVES her school. I don't know how we'll do it once our little guy starts school. Maybe by then we'll have won the lottery!!

My daughter is in public school as I'm a single parent. We used to live in the city and I tried so hard to pay for private but just couldn't. We're in Maplewood now and love it.

I have 8 children. 3 of them are in a private Lutheran School in west county. I homeschool 1 who is Autistic and I have 3 who are under school age. I Chose Lutheran because it is faith based and I choose to homeschool My son because our School district wont give and educational diagnosis of autism. So the BD room is there option. I Went to the school distric i live in and hated it. I went to other public schools and loved them and would be happy to send them to those. Cristi

We have a 12 year old and a six month old, both boys. Our older son had always been in the STL Public, untill I saw absolutely no progress in the learning process. My son had not completed requirements to be passed to 6th grade, but I recieved notice that he had been promoted to the next grade. There are so many issues with the STL Public that I was glad to get information about the new Charter Schools in the STL area. These schools are in other states like Florida and Phoenix which have good ratings for thier schools. I have noticed great improvement in his grades and willingness to participate in class. It also helps that my husband works at the school. We would not be able to afford the cost of Private (&/or Faith Based). They are uniform mandatory and gender based (boys/girls in separate class rooms and floors). Parental involvement is key. Charter School will hopefully challenge STL Public to make serious "across the board" changes.

We live in the City and have three boys. The two oldest are in grades 2 and K. They both attend Kennard Classical Junior Academy which is the gifted magnet elementary school in the St. Louis Public School District. It is an outstanding school with amazing teachers. They have a focused commitment to educate the kids. This is now our third year attending (my oldest started in Kindergarten). The City magnet program is outstanding, not only Kennard. The kids need to test in and are then placed according to the lottery. If you child is gifted you can look into other magnet schools, too, such as Shaw which has an arts focus as well as a gifted pull-out program. We were not aware of the City Schools option when we moved to the City. We just assumed that our kids would go to Catholic school. We were thrilled to find other options!

Our youngest is currently in his second year at the Soulard School. It, too, is incredible. It has a very small, intimate community. While it is a private, independent school, tuition is still reasonable - especially when compared to other independent schools.

In all, we have been thrilled with the options for education in the City. Many people flee the City for schools. That's too bad. They are missing out in my opinion.

Our daughter attends Shining Rivers Waldorf School in Webster Groves. Next year will be our third year and we love it.  The best way to describe it is an appropriate developmental approach to education using the head, heart and hands.  Waldorf and arts based education has been around for nearly 100 years and allows kids to experience the curriculum hands on. Please check it out at www.shiningrivers.org or www.whywaldorfworks.org.  Our daughter is learning German and Spanish and a musical instrument. Her class size is small and the parent community is fantastic!
