JANUARY-FEBRUARY

In January and February, and throughout the spring juniors and seniors should investigate colleges that suit their interests. Visits during the months that classes are in session will give you the best sense of campus life. Once you've narrowed down some choices, talk with your guidance counselor to determine whether your academic standing, current courses and extracurricular activities put you in the right position for admission. Juniors who have completed the math courses covered on the SAT Reasoning Test should register to take this test in March. Students who haven't yet completed the coursework need to prepare for the test and should register now to take it in May or June.

Check the Web sites for The College Board (at www.collegeboard.org) and the ACT student site at www.actstudent.org to learn the dates of the tests that will be given, and check with your guidance counselor to find out where. Seniors should make sure they have completed the Federal Application for Free Student Aid (FAFSA), available online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. Check with your target colleges to see which other financial aid forms might be required. You should receive your Student Aid Report within four weeks of submitting the FAFSA. If you haven't received it, contact the Federal Student Aid Information Center at (319)337-5665. Seniors should also complete as many applications for scholarships and other financial aid as possible. Check out www.fastweb.com and The National Research Center for College and University Admissions at www.nrccua.org for opportunities.

MARCH-APRIL High school sophomores should register now for the June SAT Subject Tests. These are one-hour exams testing knowledge of subjects that students should have completed by now. Remember that many colleges require three SAT Subject Tests and some require Math Level 1 and Math Level 2. Juniors who registered for the spring SAT Reasoning Test will take the exam in March. Juniors can also register now for the May and June SAT Reasoning Test and SAT Subject Tests. Sophomores and juniors who want to take the ACT in June have until May 7th to register. Sophomores and juniors should also be looking at summer jobs, academic programs and volunteer opportunities that will develop skills and enhance qualifications for admission to top colleges. Seniors who have chosen a college, and who have been accepted, should inform other colleges of their choice so the colleges can save the space for someone else. Double check your financial aid awards against your prospective costs to determine if you need to continue looking for sources of aid.

MAY-JUNE Sophomores should take the SAT Subject Tests they registered for in April. These can be taken again during the junior year for an opportunity to score higher. Juniors should take the SAT Reasoning Test or SAT Subject Tests in May and/or the ACT in June. They should also be attending college fairs. Check with your counselor and visit The National Association for College Admissions Counseling (NACAC) at www.nacacnet.org for locations and dates. Juniors and seniors who have colleges in mind should start visiting them. Check the institution's web sites to learn how to schedule these visits and meet with your counselor to get prepared.

Seniors should decide May 1 which college they want to attend. Seniors should also affirm when payments for tuition and room and board are due. Some students will need to take Advanced Placement examinations and requests scores to be sent to the college they're going to attend.
