MARYLAND HEIGHTS, MO (KTVI-FOX2now.com)—
Even very young babies may wiggle their bodies to the sound of music. Listening to and performing music also boosts brain power and language skills. Plus music is just plain fun! The National Center for Parents as Teachers has some ideas of musical activities you can do with your child to brighten up a rainy day or just put a smile on you and your child's face:* Sing on the go-go. Whether you're waiting in line, stuck in traffic or cruising down the road, sing out loud. Your child will love hearing you, whether you're American Idol-worthy or not! Encourage your child to sing along.
* Play a CD. Mix up a variety of music to listen to with your child, whether it's pop, jazz, classical or country.
* Make your own music. Simple items around the house can make fun musical instruments. Use empty paper towel tubes to tap together or use as drumsticks on boxes. Or put dried beans or rice in a small container with a secure lid to shake to the music. Build your own drum set with empty coffee cans, oatmeal containers or kitchen pots. Tap them with a wooden or metal spoon for different sounds. And if your ears can take it, break out the metal lids to pots to bang together.
* Do a hip dance. Put your toddler on your hip and dance to some lively music.
* Shadow dance. Do a dance motion long enough so your toddler can imitate it. Then let your child be the leader and imitate him. Take turns as you dance away!
