There is no word yet on what caused the crash, but it is exactly the reason law enforcement agencies on both sides of the river stepped up enforcement over the weekend. Labor Day weekend is always a dangerous time on the roads. And that was the case Sunday night. It was a pretty violent crash here on the Illinois side overnight. A car coming off Route 203 onto westbound Interstate 55 overshot the ramp around 2:20 a.m. Monday near Madison, Illinois.

The car slid into the median wall and caught fire. A truck driver stopped and helped put out the flames before firefighters arrived. The driver of the car was injured and transported to the hospital. There is no word yet on what caused the crash, but it is exactly the reason law enforcement agencies on both sides of the river stepped up enforcement over the weekend.

Anytime you have a large number of people on the highways, there are bound to be crashes.

The Missouri Highway Patrol and the Illinois State Police are doing this massive traffic enforcement campaign this weekend.

In Missouri, there are DUI check-points in Franklin and Jefferson counties and a will be posted every ten miles statewide on Interstate 70.

In Illinois, State Police are working with the St. Clair County Sheriff's Department beefing up patrols on the interstates, looking for speeders and drunk drivers.

Police agencies point out that these types of campaigns do help cut down on fatal accidents. In Illinois, over the past 9 years, the number of alcohol-related Illinois motor vehicle fatalities has dropped from 442 to 322.
